We are thrilled to share this rendering of a restored Dawkins House, the future alumni and corporate events center for the University of South Carolina-Union. Thank you to McMillan, Pazadan, Smith Architecture of Spartanburg for creating this rendering.
In 2023, Preservation SC purchased the then-dilapidated House (pictured) at a delinquent tax sale, with the goal of stabilizing the house and preparing it for its future role as a part of USC-Union. Upon our acquisition of the property, we received $300,000 from the State Legislature for this project. This funding would not be possible without the help of our dedicated supporters and the leaders of Union, Spartanburg, and York counties. | | The Dawkins House in 2022. | | | | When Judge Dawkins built his residence in 1845, he expanded upon a pre-existing, two-story structure. Further examination has revealed that the materials used in the construction of the older portion of the house dates closer to 1760, rather than the previously estimated 1800s.
Preservation SC and the University of South Carolina-Union intend to launch a collaborative capital campaign in the Fall to potential business and individual donors located in Union, Laurens, and adjacent counties. Donations will be used to fund Phase 2 Stabilization Construction that will prepare the structure for USC-U’s customization of the Dawkins House for its use as an alumni and corporate events center. Credible interest has already been expressed by potential corporate sponsors to participate in the funding. | | Learn more about the Dawkins House, its history, stabilization, and future plans, here. | | | | | | | - Registration open for the 4th Annual Preserving Historic Cemeteries workshop on September 19, 2025, hosted by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. The E.T. West House Event Darlington, SC | Thank you to everyone that joined us last week at our co-event with the Darlington Historical Commission on Lawrence Reese and the circa 1890 E.T. West house.
The event was catered by South Of Pearl, which provided a tasting experience inspired by the year 1890, accompanied by Jimmy Red bourbon. After the event, we held an open house. We plan to host another open house this fall, once our project is completed. We hope to see you there! | | | | Learn more about the E.T. Endangered Historic Properties Form An Endangered Properties Program Initiative | | Preservation SC's Endangered Places Program was created in 1996 as a part of the organization's initiative to support historic preservation in communities across South Carolina. The program was created to save threatened historic buildings, usually by getting the right to purchase the properties, then selling them to people who agree to restore them. To date, more than 40 properties have been protected by the program. The program is made up of two components: the Endangered Places Revolving Fund, and Endangered Places Advocacy.
This Endangered Historic Property Form is a part of the Endangered Places Advocacy component of the Program. The purpose of this form is to identify vulnerable historic properties for potential investment, while advocating and encouraging for their preservation.
Do you know of an endangered historic property that has not received the attention it deserves? Forms are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. We will reply to your submission within 60 days. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Preservation South Carolina1109 Broad Street, 2H Camden, SC 29020803.729.7782 | | | | You are receiving this email as you signed up for our newsletters.
